Should I jump ship into Social work despite lack of interest?
March 8th, 2010Hello,
I have rephrased and deleted this question within seconds a few times. Because, I was not satisfied with my wording, still not fully, although this one should be better thought out I hope.
I’m currently (was an Electronics major before) a Media major (Film, Television, Radio, new media etc inside of media) and have developed an issue. My Mother tells me that I will have trouble finding work in the media. Thing is, work is always acronym with health care: Doctors, Nursing, etc. It is quite obvious that I don’t like health care it is not something that interests me, nor social work; The good thing is that health care makes big money and can sustain myself almost instantly as their is a major demand for health care and social workers. My heart is just not in it i’ll feel like a zombie doing social work. What kind of opinions could you give me should I follow my talents and hope that “hope” exists or cave in for the money provided by something that disheartens me but would pay the bills? I know this is something that resides solely on me but I like opinions. I’m really lost, as what I like and what pays the bills. What do you think on my questions, what do you think of my love for technology that surrounds the media versus the job reality?
I quote another Yahoo poster to get my feeling (although his post is a bit different i’m looking for the material side of the majors): http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvchNgZLjE3B0mF1elmw9vQjzKIX;_ylv=3?qid=20080308111918AAutfPJ Andrew. D
“it seems everytime i find something that i could practically do for a living and could stand i hear either “that job market is over saturated” or “it is not stable enough” even if i see that it is pretty stable. and end up hearing i should do healthcare or electrician or plumbing (which i have no interest in)”
“im very disheartened at the options”
material side —> The possible aspect from committing myself.
Any negative, angry or compulsive remarks will be reported no matter how phrased.

Good social workers tend to have a “calling” to the field. You will likely not be a very good social worker if your heart isn’t in it. Much better to pursue a career that holds some interest for you. It is not your mother’s career, it is yours. Money isn’t everything.
i get what you mean cos it ain’t easy to chose between the two but personally i would go for the one you enjoy because whats the point of having the money if your not happy. But if money really matters that much maybe look for a different job like a Computer programmer if your so interested in technology but don’t make the decision lightly. and i had to chose between Business management which gives more money or physiology which i enjoy and physiology is what i chose and i don’t regret it.
